I'm using 2.4RC and have a mirrored boot drive setup with ZFS. I was wanting to partion a new SSD (ada1) with ZFS for general file system use, specifically mounting the disk in /var/squid/cache. What are the steps for partitioning the disk with ZFS so that it can be mounted into the existing file system structure? ZFS has been Linux native for years, and nowadays even the FreeBSD ZFS is a port of OpenZFS and not its own thing. You might've been correct had you stated that ZFS only works on Oracle Linux, because technically the "original" ZFS is the one that Oracle owns and develops as a closed-source solution.

- ZFS will certainly wear out an SSD sooner than say, NTFS. The question is whether we should care or not. If it were 1% most of us would say "who cares" and do it without hesitation. But what if it decreases the lifespan by 50%.

- In ZFS, people commonly refer to adding a write cache SSD as adding a "SSD ZIL." Colloquially that has become like using the phrase "laughing out loud." Your English teacher may have corrected you to say "aloud" but nowadays, people simply accept LOL (yes we found a way to fit another acronym in the piece!)

- Jul 25, 2013 · By contrast, ZFS caching is well documented and DRAM cache is a core feature. ZFS features three levels of caching: ARC, which is intelligent memory caching to RAM and uses as much free RAM as available; L2ARC, which is disposable (non-storage) SSD read caching; and ZIL, which is SSD write caching that buffers writes to the underlying volume.

You can read the first part here >> In today’s article we’ll discuss how to handle the situation when your SSD is starting to run out of free pages.

- – ZFS will cache all written data onto the SSDs so analysis jobs get 100% cache hits – No write wear issue because ingest rate is low – Faster than a pure SSD solution with no added cost: • HDDs act as protection instead of having extra SSDs for parity • Reading from L2ARC is faster than reading from an SSD RAID

- Nov 16, 2015 · As the term suggests, wear leveling provides a method for distributing program and erase cycles uniformly throughout all of the memory blocks within the SSD. This prevents continuous program and erase cycles to the same memory block, resulting in greater extended life to the overall NAND flash memory.

IMO, it's better to give the ZIL more so that you don't wear out the one spot on your SSD you give to ZIL (remember SSDs wear out). If you give it more, then the drive should move the used areas around a bit so you don't wear the drive out so quickly. Don't partition the drive and use part of it for ZIL and part of it for L2ARC.

- It is not 2% wear level, but 2% available spare, which is an entirely different thing. The current SSD wear level is 21% (as show by Percentage Used). Feel free to double check NMVe specifications. By using fast SSD as a ZFS log device, you accelerate the ZIL and improves the synchronous write performance. ZFS also has a sophisticated cache called the "Adaptive Replacement Cache" (ARC) where it stores both most frequently used blocks of data and most recently used ones. Blocks that cannot be stored in the RAM-based ARC can be stored on ... ZFS. Solaris as of version 10 Update 6 (released in October 2008), and recent [when?] versions of OpenSolaris, Solaris Express Community Edition, Illumos, Linux with ZFS on Linux, and FreeBSD all can use SSDs as a performance booster for ZFS. A low-latency SSD can be used for the ZFS Intent Log (ZIL), where it is named the SLOG.

Jul 15, 2016 · Take ZFS for instance. ZFS always writes to a new location. SSD controller always writes to a new location. Wouldn’t these two play well together, be in some deeper sense more agreeable? Shouldn’t ZFS, Btrfs, WAFL, and (log-structured) F2FS be more optimal, maybe in a long run, than in-place updaters ext4 and xfs?
